Selangor may raise the plastic bag fee!

According to a message from Selangor Executive Councillor Koh Lai Yin, the Selangor government will review the policy of charging people 20 sen per plastic bag in 2023, and will explore whether this measure is effective in encouraging the reduction of plastic bag use.

Selangor has been implementing plastic bag-free days since 2009, and now it has been extended to 7 days a week throughout the year, which means that consumers will have to pay 20 sen for plastic bags when they ask for them while shopping.

At present, many people are still not accustomed to carrying environmentally friendly bags when they go to shopping malls, but prefer to pay 20 sen for plastic bags.

It is understood that the revenue from plastic bags in the state government in 2020 has reached RM 5 million, 2021 is to reach RM 8 million, the first six months of 2022 has collected RM 4.8 million, this year is expected to exceed RM 9 million.

If the government of snow state found that the policy of levying plastic bags 20 sen can not effectively promote the plastic bag-free initiative, the government of snow state may raise the cost of plastic bags.
