In addition, the wholesale price of seafood has also spiked frequently, and there have been several wholesale price increases over the past two months. There are several main reasons for the soaring prices of our seafood, namely labor shortage, monsoon season and other factors.
The fishing industry is heavily dependent on foreign labor and the government has frozen the import of foreign labor for several months. The lack of labor has reduced fish production, which directly affects the supply and demand in the market. The end of the year is the northeast monsoon season and the high winds and waves at sea prevent fishermen from going to sea to catch fish, which also results in less seafood available in the market.
Chinese people like to eat fish during the Lunar New Year, so it is believed that there will be a new round of price increase for seafood before the Lunar New Year.
