It turns out that explosions in Samsung washing machines are not a recent occurrence, with one lawsuit stemming from November 2016, when Samsung Electronics USA announced that it would voluntarily recall 2.8 million specific models of top-opening washing machines, which, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission at the time, had received 730 reports of problematic washing machine explosions in which nine people were injured.
Elliot Kaye, chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, said the tops of the problem washers are dangerous and can be blown off completely, mainly due to a design defect in the washers.
