All Malaysians must apply for their first MyKad by the age of 16 and also apply and replace it with a second MyKad by the age of 25!
MyKad is an identification document for Malaysian citizens and all Malaysian citizens aged 12 or above will have a MyKad. Cardholder’s ID number, name, address and other information will be clearly displayed on MyKad.
According to National Registration Act 1990 (as amended in 2007), all Malaysian citizens aged 12 years and above must apply for MyKad. If the application is made within 30 days of turning 12 years old (birthday), there is no application fee.
People must apply for their first card before they turn 16 years old at the latest. Late application for the card is subject to a penalty of RM10 for every year of delay.
When applying for first MyKad, applicant must be accompanied by the father, mother or guardian. Applicant must bring birth certificate and the father or mother’s MyKad. If the address on the parent’s ID card does not match the address where the applicant currently resides, the applicant will need to bring additional documents that prove the address where he/she currently resides.
In addition, under the National Registration Act 1990 (amended in 2007), people are also required to change to a second MyKad between their 18th birthday and the age of 25. When applying for a replacement of the second card, it is necessary to bring the existing card and if the address of the card does not match the existing address, additional documents proving the existing address are required. The replacement fee is RM10.
