Parents, please take note! Remember to bring your children who are already 12 years old to apply for MyKad (Malaysian Card).
According to Section 3 of the National Registration Act 1990 (amended in 2007), all Malaysian citizens who have reached the age of 12 must apply for a MyKad before 16. Those who apply for a MyKad after the age of 16 will be required to pay a minimum fee of RM10.
When child turns 12 years old, parent or guardian is required to take the child to the nearest National Registration Office (JPN) to apply for MyKad. The child’s birth certificate (Sijil Kelahiran) and the original MyKad of the parent or guardian must be brought along when applying for MyKad.
Malaysian are also required to renew their cards between the ages of 18 to 25, otherwise a fine of RM20 will be imposed. Failure to do so will result in a fine of RM20 per year.
The reason why the National Registration Authority requires Malaysians to renew MyKad between the ages of 18 and 25 is because the first RM20 card is a picture of a person at the age of 12, which will be very different from the person’s appearance as an adult. Anyone who renews their MyKad after the age of 26 will be fined RM20, with an additional RM20 fine for each year of delay in renewal.
