Rabies is a zoonotic disease caused by the rabies virus. It is almost 100% fatal once clinical symptoms appear. Rabies is transmitted to humans through animal bites, scratches or saliva.
The incubation period for rabies is usually two to three months, ranging from less than a week to up to a year, depending on factors such as where the rabies virus enters and the amount of virus. The initial symptoms of rabies are fever, usually pain at the site of the wound, and unusual or unexplained shivering, tingling or burning sensations (abnormal sensations). As the virus spreads through the central nervous system, it develops into a progressive inflammation of the brain and spinal cord that can be fatal.
If you are unfortunate enough to be scratched or bitten by a dog, immediately flush the wound with water for up to 15 minutes and then take it urgently to hospital for treatment.
To be noted! Rabies is a vaccine-preventable disease. Remember to vaccinate your dog.
