The Prime Minister hopes to eradicate extreme poverty in the country by 2025.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ishmael Sabri said that the government has already implemented the plan to eradicate extreme poverty through the Economic Planning Unit (BMTKM) and the government hopes to eradicate extreme poverty in the country by 2025.
The prime minister noted that he was born into a poor family and understands the plight of poverty, so he decided to make poverty eradication his primary goal. Many M40 middle-income groups have also become B40 low-income groups under the coronary disease epidemic.
According to the Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs of the Prime Minister’s Department last year, 20% or 600,000 M40 middle-income group have become B40 low-income group under the epidemic. This means that about 50% of the Malaysian population is now in the B40 low-income group.
According to a study by the Malaysian Bureau of Statistics, the average gross household income in the country has declined by 10.3% between 2019 and 2020. The government will adopt the poverty line (PGK) standard of RM1169 from 2022, which means that households with household income below RM1169 will be classified as extremely poor and can apply for assistance benefits from the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
