Penang cops are on the hunt for people who are playing with carbide cannons.

In a video that has gone popular on social media since yesterday, a group of guys were seen shooting carbide cannons towards the roadside of Jalan Permatang Rawa in Penang.

The loud noises of the cannons were a disruption to surrounding homes, according to Seberang Perai Tengah police commander ACP Shafee Abd Samad, based on the two-minute 20-second video recording.

According to Shafee, “we are undertaking additional investigations and tracking down people engaged in the video that went viral on Twitter.”

He warned people not to use carbide cannons during the Hari Raya celebrations because it was illegal under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

Previously, a video of a group of men having fun with carbide cannons built of PVC pipes in front of a row of shophouses drew the wrath of netizens since the cannons were directed at a busy road.

Netizens also chastised the group for disrespecting Ramadan and failing to consider the safety of others, particularly the elderly, who might be alarmed and stressed by the loud explosions.

Meanwhile, 19 deaths due to Covid-19 were recorded across Malaysia yesterday, according to the Health Ministry’s GitHub portal, with Selangor continuing to have the most cases with four, followed by Johor, Kedah, Pahang, Perak, Sarawak, and Kuala Lumpur with two each.

Each of the three states of Melaka, Penang, and Terengganu reported one case.
