Our country is currently experiencing a monsoon break, which means it could be a hot day and then sudden downpours the next day, according to the meteorological department as quoted by the China Daily. Yesterday’s sudden downpour in Kuala Lumpur was the monsoon break phenomenon.
The south-west monsoon season runs from May to September every year and this year the south-west monsoon started on 14 May. During this season, the humidity angle of the air makes it difficult for rain clouds to form and therefore rainfall is reduced.
However, when the wind changes direction and blows towards a specific area, it can facilitate the formation of rain clouds, which in turn leads to humid weather. During the southwest monsoon, the west coast of the peninsula and western Sabah will face heavy rainfall in the early morning hours, which may be accompanied by strong winds and lightning storm lines.
The inter-monsoon period will occur several times between May and September. When travelling, you will need an umbrella or parasol to protect you from the sun when it is hot and from the rain when it is raining.
