I believe everyone knows that our country’s cars, motorcycles and bicycles use the same lane on road, which will cause certain problems for some relatively narrow roads. If you drive to some busy areas, you will see many motorcycles “parking” in front, back, left or right of the vehicle, which is very dangerous. In order to ensure the safety of every driver and pedestrian, Penang Island City Hall has prepared an “orange grid” (Bike Box) for everyone. What is the orange grid for? Let’s understand the role of the orange grid on the road!
Recently, friends in Penang noticed that many Penang areas have successively painted this orange grid, with motorcycle and bicycle signs painted on too. The purpose of it is for motorcycles and bicycles to park and wait for the traffic lights. Motorcycles and bicycles are not allowed to park outside of the grid, you can refer to the following picture.
Other than motorcyclists and bicycle users, pedestrian can also use the orange grid to cross the road if there is no zebra crossing.
The picture above is an example of incorrect way of using the orange grid. Please make sure that the car should be parked behind the orange grid, and the motorcycle and bicycle must be parked in the orange grid and while waiting for the traffic lights.
Especially for motorcyclists who likes to park in the shade and wait for the traffic lights, it is actually against the rules. Please take note!
