Northeast Monsoon Alert: Met Department Issues 5-Month Heavy Rainfall Warning

28/11/2023

The northeast monsoon is predicted to see four to six episodes of heavy rainfall starting on November 11 and lasting until March of next year, according to a warning released today by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).

According to a statement, from November 2023 to January of the following year, there should be periods of intense rainfall in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, and western Sarawak.

Nonetheless, METMalaysia stated that persistently high rain could fall in other Malaysian states if the monsoon winds are strong and aligned with a low-pressure weather system.Flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas can result from days of nonstop, intense rain.

“If continuous heavy rain occurs simultaneously with high tide events and storm surges, the risk of flooding can become more extreme” “Furthermore, sustained and strong northeast winds can cause rough seas, a risk of rising sea levels, and large waves in the South China Sea,” according to Met Malaysia. Additionally, it stated that less rainfall is anticipated in Sabah, Labuan, northern Sarawak, Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Kelantan, and Terengganu in the northern parts of the Peninsula between February and March 2024.Heatwaves could result from the hot, dry weather that is predicted to begin in March 2024. “This situation is due to the expected continuation of El Nino until mid-2024 and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) until the first quarter of 2024.”
