No decision yet on waiving tolls for Deepavali, Dewan Rakyat told

06/11/2023

As of now, there is no definitive decision regarding the potential waiver of toll fees in connection with the upcoming Deepavali celebrations, scheduled for Sunday, November 12. The Deputy Works Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad, provided this information during a session in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday, November 6. He emphasized that there have not been any formal discussions on this matter, and any decision to waive toll fees for the holiday would necessitate the approval of the Finance Ministry. The consideration of toll fee waivers is an important issue, as it can significantly impact travelers during the festive season. Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is a major Hindu festival celebrated with great enthusiasm and grandeur in Malaysia, as well as in various other parts of the world. Many people plan to travel to visit family and friends, and toll fees can add a financial burden to their journey. Therefore, discussions surrounding the potential waiver of these fees are of great interest to the public, especially during the holiday season.
It’s worth noting that such decisions typically involve a thorough assessment of their economic implications and the feasibility of implementing them. The involvement of the Finance Ministry in the approval process suggests that a careful evaluation of the potential impact on government finances will be conducted before any decision is made. As Deepavali is fast approaching, it remains to be seen whether further discussions and decisions will take place in the lead-up to the festival. The final outcome will have a direct bearing on the convenience and financial well-being of those celebrating the holiday and looking forward to a safe and affordable journey to be with their loved ones. “After it is authorised, the Works Ministry will declare whether or not tolls would be waived during Deepavali. In response to RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong), who inquired as to whether there will be a toll-free period for Deepavali, he said, “In any case, I support this.” This week is when it takes place. Given that it’s a long holiday, will the government announce any toll-free periods? “We are eagerly waiting for this announcement,” Rayer said.
