Next Monday is a public holiday!
Monday, June 6 is the birthday of the Head of State, which is a national public holiday and also a statutory public holiday. In 2021, the government will set the Head of State’s birthday on the first Monday of June every year.
Since the Head of State’s birthday falls on a Monday, this, together with the weekly vacations on Saturday and Sunday, will result in a 3-day long weekend holiday. If you need to work on Saturdays, you will also be entitled to 2 days off.
Under Section 60D of the Labour Act 1955, all wage earners are entitled to 11 paid public holidays per year, of which 5 are statutory public holidays, namely National Day, the Birthday of the Head of State, the Birthday of the Sultan or State Head of State or Federal Territory Day, Labour Day and Malaysia Day.
Since the Head of State’s Birthday is a statutory public holiday, if an employer requires an employee to work on June 6, the employer must provide the employee with a salary under the Public Holidays Act.
