A Facebook user recently posted about unexplained blue lights emerging at Astaka Pantai Seagate, a beachside food court in Bayan Lepas, Penang Island. Many people have been astounded by these lights, which are created by bioluminescent bugs known as “Blue Tears.”
Blue Tears are small sea microorganisms or plankton that range in size from 0.2mm to 2mm. They thrive by absorbing energy from seawater and are also known as “Blue Tear” or “Blue Sand.” Within their bodies, these marine plankton have structures known as bioluminescent glands. They emit a faint blue glow when activated by stimuli such as the smashing of waves.
