According to the Ministry of Health, children under the age of 12 will have to wait until 2022 to receive the vaccine as only Pfizer’s vaccine is currently available for children under the age of 12 and is awaiting approval from the European Union and the United States.
Pfizer expects to submit data on the use of Pfizer’s vaccine in children under 12 years of age to the Malaysian Drug Commission by the end of this year. The data will be evaluated and approved by the Malaysian Drug Commission.
It is understood that the formulation of the vaccine for children under 12 years of age is different from that of the adult vaccine and therefore requires the approval of the Malaysian Drug Commission and the Medicines Control Board. A total of 5.9 million children in Malaysia will be vaccinated against coronary heart disease, which will involve approximately 11.8 million doses of vaccine.
The Ministry of Health is currently actively promoting vaccination of adolescents and providing booster doses for senior citizen.
