I’m sure those of you who like to visit bookstores are familiar with BookXcess, not only do they have a wide variety of books, but each bookstore has a unique design and is arguably one of the favourite photo spots for young people! However, they recently caused a bit of a stir when they promoted their new bookshop in Garden Mall as a [women only] bookshop.
The news has generated much debate among netizens, with some supporting the initiative as a way to protect women’s privacy and safety, but others arguing that it is unnecessary. After all, a bookshop is a public reading space which is not in any potential crisis, and if it really is about protecting women’s privacy, as the owner claims, then don’t we need women’s restaurants, women’s supermarkets and women’s convenience stores in the future too?
The real protection for women should be to allow women to walk in the street or any public place without fear, not to draw a circle to enclose them. Dont you think so?
