A netizen recently wrote anonymously on Ricebowl, a job-search forum, claiming that he/she had done nothing at work for half a month and was feeling terrible about earning their salary without contributing. He/She questioned other netizens if he/she should change careers since he/she was feeling too relaxed or unfulfilled. This post triggered a heated debate among internet users.
The anonymous netizen mentioned that he/she had recently started working as a project-based employee for a new company. However, because he/she had not recently been assigned any new projects, their daily routine consisted of doing odd jobs. Despite having been with the company for a month and a half, the netizen remained idle, either daydreaming or doing their own thing at work. This situation caused the netizen to seriously rethink his/hers profession, as he/she thought they were “sitting around” and earning more than RM3500 per month for doing nothing.
The anonymous netizen feels terrible about collecting a paycheck without doing any work and has offered to assist the boss several times but has been declined owing to being too busy. The netizen emphasizes that he/she is a new member and cannot contribute much to the boss’s task. However, after a month of doing nothing, the netizen begins to wonder if this is normal and wonders if he/she should change jobs.
Other netizens advised the anonymous user to be patient and not to worry too much, as they will most likely become very busy in the near future:
“That’s just how it is with Project Based work”,
“You can’t approach Project Based work with a regular work mentality”.
They shared their experiences, adding that having no tasks can be rather peaceful, but having a new project can mean working overtime every night, especially during peak seasons when the company can be so busy that individuals sleep or remain overnight.
