Malaysia Traffic Act: ” ❌ People prohibited from riding bicycles on highways!!!”

The new Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Bureau chief, Datuk Makian Karim, has warned that people should not ride bicycles on the highway, according to China Daily.Under Section 54(1) of the Land Transport Act 1987 (reckless driving/cycling), there will be a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to 12 months for those who break the law.

He pointed out that in 2021 there were 150 accidents involving bicycles, resulting in 71 deaths, 24 serious injuries and 55 minor injuries!

Dato’ Mahim Karim also explained that there are signs on the highway that prohibit bicycles.Moreover, under the provisions of Road Regulation No. 35 and 42 of 1959, bicycles found on the road without front and rear lights, brakes and warning bells can face a fine of up to RM2,000 or up to six months in jail.

Dato’ Majin Karim emphasized that the police are not trying to stop people from riding bicycles, but to advise cyclists to choose the right time and place to ride.
