Will Malaysia launch a 5G network using a single or dual wholesale network? The government will make an announcement on March 16.
The government was expected to make an announcement on the rollout of 5G using either a single or dual wholesale network on March 11, but the latest news is that the government has delayed the announcement until March 16.
Malaysia’s 5G network rollout has been slow and controversial. The government originally planned to launch the 5G network using a single wholesale network, which means the government set up the National Digital Berhad (DNB), a company that will be responsible for building and operating the 5G network. Domestic telecommunications companies would lease the 5G network infrastructure from DNB to provide the 5G network.
The government’s use of a single wholesale network to roll out the 5G network has been boycotted by the country’s major telcos, namely Axiata Celcom, Digi, Celcom and U Mobile. only Yes and Unifi have announced their partnership with DNB and are using DNB’s 5G network facilities.
The four telecommunications companies are concerned that a single wholesale network model may cause them to lack access to the new technologies of the future. four major telecommunications companies have asked the government to allow a dual wholesale model to roll out 5G, which means that the four telecommunications companies will form a joint venture to build and operate the 5G network. The joint venture’s 5G network will compete with DNB’s 5G network.
Whether the government will allow the four companies to set up a new company to build and operate the 5G network, let’s look forward to March 16.
