According to Agoda, Japan is the most sought-after destination for many Asian travellers during the Lunar New Year. According to the global digital travel platform’s search data, Japan topped the list of hot destinations, followed by Malaysia and Thailand.

This year, Agoda’s data shows that many travelers choose to travel short distances and only travel to nearby destinations for the New Year. However, the opposite is true for Chinese and Japanese travelers, who mostly want to travel to warmer places, resulting in Thailand being at the top of their hot list. Meanwhile, Thai travelers wanted to travel to cooler places, and most of them wanted to go to Japan.
Agoda’s search data also shows the top searched destinations within the 3 most popular countries, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand. Japan’s metropolitan areas were the most searched destinations, with Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka in the top three, while Agoda’s search data showed that Kuala Lumpur was the top searched destination in Malaysia, followed by Malacca and Penang, reflecting travelers’ fascination with Malaysia’s cultural heritage and bustling city atmosphere.
