Malaysia has recorded 31,661 cases of HFMD, a 15-fold increase over the previous year, according to the Health Ministry.

Malaysia has recorded 31,661 cases of HFMD.

Malaysia has seen a 15-fold increase in the number of cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) over the same period previous year.

In the same epidemiological week study last year, the country only had 2,121 participants.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham noted that in the previous epidemiological week report, 1,676 HFMD cases were registered, compared to 7,526 cases this week, a 349 percent rise.

HFMD CASES:

Selangor: 8,864 cases (28%)

Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya: 4,421 cases (14%)

Sabah: 2,650 cases (8%)

Perak: 2,638 cases (8%)

Kelantan: 2,493 cases (7.9%)

Other states contributing around or less than 1,500 cases.

According to him, a total of 889 occurrences were reported in Malaysia, with the three states with the most outbreaks being Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (309 outbreaks, or 35 percent), Selangor (111 outbreaks, or 12 percent), and Perak (105 outbreaks or 12 per cent).

According to Dr. Noor Hisham, the bulk of outbreaks occurred in kindergartens, nurseries, and pre-schools, with 575 occurrences (65%), private houses with 305 outbreaks (34%), and daycare centres with 27 outbreaks (3%).

He claims that HFMD is linked to poor personal hygiene and can spread quickly among children under the age of ten, with a 100% infection rate.

Dengue fever is on the rise

In addition, the ministry recorded a 44.2% increase in dengue cases, with 14,725 total cases compared to 10,139 cases in the same period previous year.

Dr. Noor Hisham also stated that Malaysia had nine dengue deaths in 2018, which is four more than in 2021.

Kedah: 137.8%

Negri Sembilan: 71.4%

Selangor: 42.6%

Sabah: 40.8%

Kelantan: 27.1%

Perak: 26.4%

Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya: 14.3%

Sarawak: 13.7%

Penang: 3.4%

Perlis, Melaka, Johor, and Pahang recorded a decrease in the percentage of cases compared to 2021.
