Learn about the thunderstorm warning levels issued by the Meteorological Department of Malaysia.

The country will enter the monsoon period from October 3 onwards. During the monsoon period, there will be several thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening. Lightning and flooding may break out in low-lying areas after the thunderstorms.

 

The Meteorological Department will issue weather warnings as soon as possible, so people are urged to pay attention to the thunderstorm warnings issued by the Meteorological Department. Here you will also find the levels of thunderstorm warnings.

 

1. Thunderstorm Warning (Amaran Ribut Petir)
Color used: Blue
Meaning: A thunderstorm warning is issued when an area receives more than 20 mm of rain per hour and is predicted to last for about or more than one hour. The thunderstorm warning issued by the Meteorological Department will be a short-term warning, generally valid for no more than 6 hours.

 

2. Continuous Rainstorm Warning (Amaran Hujan Lebat Berterusan)
a. Warning (Waspada)
Color used: Yellow
Meaning: Rainfall lasting 1 to 3 days, or persistent rain/thunderstorm is occurring, although it has not yet reached the severe (Buruk) level.

 

b. Severe (Buruk)
Color used: orange/orange
Meaning: When an area is expected to receive more than 60mm of rainfall in 6 hours, the Meteorological Office will issue an orange level rainstorm warning for the area.

 

c. Danger (Bahaya)
Color used: Red
Meaning: When an area is expected to receive more than 150mm of rainfall in 24 hours, the Meteorological Bureau will issue a red level Very Heavy Rainfall Warning for that area.
