Malaysian licence plates are arranged in alphabetical and numerical order and you can tell where the vehicle is registered by the letter of the plate. The first letter of the Malaysian number plate represents the state, such as Selangor is B, Johor is J, Penang is P, Kedah is K, Negeri Sembilan is N, Pahang is C, Perak is A, Sabah is S, Sarawak is Q, etc.
The second and third letters of the alphabet are used as the order of the number plate. For example, in Johor, the number plate starts from JTA to JTY and then goes from JUA to JUY and so on. However, the letters I, O and Z will not be used in the number plates as this is to avoid confusion with the numbers 1, 0 and 2.
As of 23 May 2022, the latest number plate order for Johor is JVG7905, Selangor is BQW8193, Penang is PQG1634, Perak is AMK4761, Negeri Sembilan is NDU1843, etc. JPJ has also launched an online service to purchase number plates, which means that you can directly visit mySIKAP to purchase a number plate.
