Kelantan has set aside RM141.2M to replace old pipes.

Since 2019, the Kelantan government has set aside a total of RM141.2 million for the replacement of 226 kilometres (km) of old pipes.

Datuk Azami Mohd Nor, chairman of the State Public Works, Infrastructure, Transport, and Utility Committee, stated that the pipe replacement affected four districts: Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai, Kota Baru, and Machang.

Package three’s most recent additions are Kota Baru Utara, Kota Baru Timur, Tumpat, Kota Baru 11, and Kota Baru Selatan, where tender documents for 95 kilometres of pipeline are currently being prepared. The project is expected to be completed in 2024.

The first package’s well construction at the Tanjong Mas facility is still ongoing and has already reached 77% completion. We are planning a water capacity of 30 million litres per day under package two for the construction of the Tanjong Mas Water Treatment Plant (LRA), and the bidding process is expected to begin this month.

Azami stated that a loan is still being sought for the proposed upgrade of the Merbau Chondong treatment plant system, which is set to be completed in 2024. The Merbau Chondong plant has the capacity to produce up to 60 million litres of clean water per day, thereby addressing the issue of clean water supply, particularly in Pulai Chondong and a large portion of the state.

The state government will make several efforts to address the issue of clean water supply in the area, including completing the remaining work on the plant, which will cost RM1.7 million.
