According to a release from banks, a fee of RM1.00 will be charged for inter-bank ATM withdrawals from 1 February 2022 onwards.
For example, if you hold a bank card from Hong Leong Bank and you want to withdraw money from a MayBank ATM, you will have to pay a fee of RM1.00. If you hold a MayBank bank card and you withdraw money from a MayBank ATM, you will not be charged the RM1.00 fee.
When the government implemented the MCO in 2020, banks in the country announced a temporary waiver of the RM1.00 fee for interbank withdrawals to avoid people from crossing state. As the government opens up economic activities and lifts the ban on mobility restrictions, banks will resume charging the RM1.00 fee for inter-bank ATM withdrawals.
ATMs are a crowded place, so it is recommended to use e-wallets and e-transfers for transactions, which will reduce the number of ATM withdrawals and the risk of contracting covid.
