Attention Food Operators: Using Glass Fish Tanks to Serve Beverages is Illegal!
The Ministry of Health advises food service businesses that providing food and beverages in glass fish tanks is illegal.
According to a press release, this practice is prohibited by Section 31 of the 1985 Food Regulations, which prohibits the use of containers not designed for food storage.
“The Ministry of Health and the Food Safety and Quality Division have observed a widespread social media trend in which glass fish tanks are being sold as water storage containers.”
“While glass fish tanks may be suitable for keeping fish, they are not suitable for storing food, and doing so is considered illegal.”
According to the press release, the chemical chemicals included in glass fish tanks can dissolve into the water, contaminating it and posing health hazards.
“Glass fish tanks are typically made from glass, acrylic, or plastic materials, which may contain chemicals such as lead or phthalates.”
As a result, the press release emphasizes the need for both sellers and consumers to take food safety seriously and ensure that the food sold is both safe and of excellent quality.
“The Ministry of Health and the Food Safety and Quality Division will continue to monitor the sale of food, including beverages served in non-food containers. The public is advised to purchase food from clean and proper food premises.”
For any concerns related to food safety, the public can contact their local health department or visit the Food Safety and Quality Division’s website at http://moh.spab.gov.my or www.facebook.com/bkkmhq.
