According to surveillance footage broadcast by Iceland’s national broadcaster, a volcano in the southwest continued to erupt, and lava flowed into the local fishing village of Grindavik, causing two houses to catch fire. Local residents have been evacuated, but sheep are still penned in pens.
Agence France-Presse reported that dozens of residents who had returned to the town of Grindavik after an earlier eruption were evacuated last night, hours before the volcano began erupting again.
BBC News reported that all residents of the town of Grindavík had been evacuated. But the president of the Animal Protection Association of Iceland told Iceland’s national broadcaster RUV that sheep were still penned in the town.
She said there were 30 sheep in one of the pens, and there were also sheep in another pen that needed rescue.
Reports indicate that Icelandic President Gudni Thorlacius Johannesson is scheduled to deliver a national address at 8pm GMT.
The BBC said in the report: “Now we see lava bubbles flowing from a volcanic fissure near the town of Grindavik. The lava overflowed from this fissure and flowed into the town, causing damage to houses.”
