According to a message sent by Deputy Human Resources Minister, National Salary Commission has completed discussion of the minimum salary review on December 9 and is now preparing to submit the report to the Cabinet for discussion.
The current minimum salary is RM1,200 and the measure will take effect from 2020 when the minimum salary in 57 major cities will be raised from RM1,100 to RM1,200, other areas not in the list of 57 cities will maintain the minimum wage of RM1,100 per month and the Ministry of Human Resources is now suggesting to raise the national minimum salary to RM1,500.
According to a survey conducted by the National Bank in 2016, a single person living in the city would need at least RM2,700 per month, while a couple family would need RM4,500 and a family with two children would need RM6,500.
This means that our current minimum salary system of RM1,200 cannot meet the standards set by the National Bank. The government is discussing raising the minimum salary to RM1,500, which also cannot meet the standard.
