Several states and regions in Malaysia have recently experienced heavy rain or thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening. The MetMalaysia reminds the public to pay attention and reduce activities in high-risk areas in the afternoon.

In an interview with Bernama TV, director-general of the Malaysia Meteorological Department Muhammad Helmi pointed out that heavy rains or thunderstorms have often rained in the afternoon recently, so he urged the public not to move in dangerous areas such as riversides.

He also reminded those who go out to sea or visit holiday islands to always pay attention to the strong wind and surf warnings issued by the MetMalaysia. Information about strong winds and waves is important for travelers who want to travel to the island, but don’t want to be stranded on a holiday island.

He also explained the various weather warnings issued by the MetMalaysia, noting that warnings of strong winds and waves can be issued early, but warnings of heavy rain and thunderstorms can only be detected by radar after cloud formation or the start of thunder in an area is detected.

As for landslides, it is difficult to issue early warnings, because there are many factors that cause landslides, including geological factors and heavy rain. Therefore, residents living in dangerous areas are urged to always pay attention to the thunderstorm warning issued by the MetMalaysia and pay attention to take precautionary measures around the environment.

On the other hand, the MetMalaysia has issued an alert a few days ago, stating that from now until mid-May, Malaysia will usher in a period of alternating monsoons, and during this period, thunderstorm clouds are likely to form, bringing strong winds and rainstorms in a short period of time, especially in the afternoon and evening hours. Under such climatic conditions, it is possible to trigger flash floods or damage unstable structures.
