Health Sciences Authority (HSA) found that one or two chemical components in some batches of 18 hand sanitizers exceeded the standard, so it ordered wholesalers to stop supplying related products and return the surplus stock to manufacturers.
The acetaldehyde and methanol levels of these hand sanitizers are higher than the pharmacopoeia, and many of them are quite common brands, such as Guardian’s own brand and Lifebuoy.
HSA pointed out that these products belong to secondary recycling, which means that the problems caused by the products should not lead to serious adverse consequences for health. Moreover, the recycled products may not necessarily mean that the products are unsafe or ineffective, and sometimes it may be because the products have quality defects that will not affect the safety or effectiveness.
HSA only announced on its website that it would take back the products between February and April this year, and issued a recall instruction to wholesalers. It also shows that not all product recycling will issue press releases, and only when the products are widely sold or will cause serious consequences will the public be notified. However, it does not explain the specific consequences of using these hand sanitizers for individuals.
