Grab dominates the Southeast Asian market! Ridesharing, food delivery, and e-wallet market share have all surpassed their competitors!

05/03/2022

Grab, the largest e-hailing and food delivery platform in the Eastern Association, has generated a lot of buzz following the news that its losses widened in both the fourth quarter and the full year last year (2021). Nevertheless, Grab said that even with the challenges of the Delta and Omicron variants in 2021, it still achieved more than expected growth in GMV and revenue, so it believes that as the economy gradually recovers at this stage, the company will also offer more incentives to drivers to keep the company ahead of the position.

In addition to announcing its annual results for 2021, Grab has also announced its market share in Southeast Asia. According to Euromonitor International, Grab has 71% of the market share in Southeast Asia, which is 3.9 times more than other ride-hailing platforms.

Grab also has a 51% share of the Southeast Asian market in the meal delivery segment, nearly 2.1 times ahead of its competitors, and a 21% share of the e-wallet segment, nearly 1.3 times ahead of its competitors.

From observing the above data, we can see that Grab has gained a large market share in the e-hailing segment, so if Grab’s platform fails like last time, it will also lead to inconvenience, distress, and even financial loss, for users who often rely on Grab’s platform.

The more serious thing is that when Grab’s market share in the e-hailing sector increases further, it will be without competition from peers, and the rights of consumers might be affected.
