Grab already revealed in December 2021 that it would develop its own digital map, GrabMaps, and now teases that it will fully launch the service in the third quarter of 2022, no longer relying on third-party mapping services.
GrabMaps was originally developed for internal use, as the small alleys and narrow streets common to Southeast Asian cities do not appear on traditional maps. To solve this problem, Grab decided to develop its own digital maps to improve business efficiency and save costs.
GrabMaps will be built through drivers, passengers and partners, providing not only geolocation and distance time calculations, but also real-time traffic information and parking information.
GrabMaps is already available in seven countries and will go live in the third quarter of 2022, moving away from reliance on third-party mapping services.
