Government may introduce old car scrappage measures in 2025!

14/08/2022

According to Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation,  government intends to start scrapping old cars by 2025, and not allow old cars of a certain age to be driven on the roads.

Government has yet to finalise this measure as it is still in the study stage. However, many foreign countries have already implemented scrapping measures for older cars and they have been quite successful. Older cars can also be dismantled and sold for parts.

The scrapping of old cars not only reduces the risks associated with driving them on the road, but also reduces many of the problems caused by old cars. Many car owners simply leave their old cars in public places or on the roadside, which not only affects the appearance of the city, but also causes health and environmental problems.

According to figures released by the Ministry of Transport, there are over 33 million vehicles registered in China, 19 million of which are over 10 years old.

In June this year, Transport Minister Dato’ Seri Wei Jiaxiang pointed out that the country’s public transport system is not yet complete and the government will not follow Singapore’s example and implement a 10-year vehicle scrapping system in Kuala Lumpur for the time being.
