According to a message from the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, government will import frozen chicken from Thailand, China and Brazil until the local broiler supply is stabilized. The aim of this measure is to solve the problem of shortage of domestic broiler supply so that people can buy broilers.
Broiler importers must meet various conditions, including ensuring that imported broilers meet halal specifications.
The domestic demand for chicken meat is 3,762 metric tons or 2.09 million pieces per day and 113,220 metric tons or 62.9 million pieces per month. The shortage of chicken meat supply in the country has caused the price of chicken meat to be marked up to RM10 per kilogram.
The government’s importation of broilers could solve the chicken shortage problem. Cheaper chicken meat is flooding the market and this will give the people an additional choice instead of buying expensive local chicken meat.
