As political parties published their lists of candidates for the Johor state election next month, certain locations are expected to see heated competition, with candidates from various Opposition parties vying for the same seats.

The most contentious are the state seats of Larkin and Puteri Wangsa, which have sparked a feud between PKR and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda).

After an impasse in negotiations between the two Opposition parties over seat assignments, Muda will face PKR in the Larkin seat on March 12.

PKR had earlier announced Zamil Najwah Arbain as its candidate for the seat, while Mohamad Riadz Tan Sri Mohamad Hashim was selected by Parti Pejuang Tanah Air.

Following Muda’s declaration, Johor PKR deputy chairman Jimmy Puah urged his party to reconsider fielding a candidate in Larkin, according to Malaysiakini.

PKR would not capitulate in the constituency, according to Puah, who added that a meeting will be held to examine alternative measures, including retaliation against Muda.

Muda had earlier stated that it would nominate Muda field secretary-general Amira Aisya in Puteri Wangsa, and despite PKR’s displeasure, the latter party has yet to name a candidate for the seat, according to its most recent list of candidates.

Meanwhile, the Parti Pejuang Tanah Air has nominated Khairil Anwar Razali for the same seat.

The Puteri Wangsa seat, which PKR complained about when it was granted to Muda, would be a prime target for retaliation.
