The government will not implement the 10-year vehicle scrapping system recently!

For the moment being, the government will not implement the 10-year vehicle scrapping system!

According to Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong, the Minister of Transport, the domestic public transportation system is not yet perfect, and the government will not follow Singapore’s lead and implement a 10-year vehicle scrapping system in the Kuala Lumpur region.

The first phase of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (MRT2) route has just opened, and the second phase is expected to open by the end of the year or early next year. The third MRT (MRT3) has only recently begun the bidding process.

Some academics have previously proposed that the government implement a 10-year vehicle scrapping programme to alleviate domestic traffic congestion. Since 2019, the number of registered vehicles in my country has increased at a rate of at least one million per year, reaching 33.3 million in 2021, which is more than our country’s total population.

Wee Ka Siong believes that the 10-year vehicle scrapping system is not appropriate at this time. If the government implements the 10-year vehicle scrapping system, it will increase the burden on people, particularly low-income groups who still drive vehicles that are more than ten years old.

The government issued a message in 2019 stating that it is considering requiring old cars of a certain age to be inspected every year, but no decision has been made.
