Extramarital Affair Turns Engineer into Spy, Resulting in Prison Sentence

05/07/2023

Many years ago, a female engineer surnamed Huang from Yunnan Province, China, traveled abroad to study. She met a handsome and elegant man there and began a covert affair despite being married. She ended up working for him as a spy for 17 years, even enlisting her husband in the scam. After their acts were revealed, Huang and her husband were sentenced to ten and three years in jail, respectively.

According to reports from Chinese media, Huang worked as an engineer in a government agency in Yunnan Province. Despite her marital status, she met a charming and sophisticated man in 2002 while earning her master’s degree abroad.

During their connection, the man disclosed that he worked as an information consultant and promised to compensate Huang for any information she might provide. Huang, seduced by the proposition, promptly joined forces with him. During her trips back to China, she gathered sensitive documents and delivered them to her partner in another country.

Later, the man discovered that Huang’s husband, surnamed Li, was the deputy county mayor of a county in Yunnan Province. He urged Li to join their operation in the hopes of obtaining internal government documents. As a result, Huang and Li both became spies, gathering crucial information for the man.

Huang and Li followed the man’s instructions for the next 17 years. Huang would bring home sensitive work documents, which Li would photograph and store. Huang utilized her technical skills to conceal and encrypt the images before shipping them abroad on USB devices.

The pair earned $49,000 (about MYR 227,900) and 310,000 yuan (approximately MYR 199,900) as spies over a 17-year period. The man even assisted Huang in opening an offshore bank account and putting 1 million yuan (about MYR 644,900) as a retirement fund, allowing them to continue cheerfully serving him.

In 2019, the pair was charged with espionage by the national security service after their offenses were revealed. They were eventually condemned to 10 and 3 years in prison, respectively. Huang not only became a victim of fraud and risked imprisonment, but she also lost her work, which was a substantial financial loss for her.
