Everyone knows how to speed test the Internet, do you understand the meaning of the Speedtest noun?

08/12/2021

If you want to know what your internet speed is, everyone uses speed test software, and SpeedTest is the most commonly used speed test software.

SpeedTest provides users with data on their connections, and the speed of the Internet is no longer a physical sensation, but a clear number for everyone to see! However, SpeedTest everyone can use, the above numbers and the use of the method, we really have to understand?

1. Server

When you open the speed test software, the system will automatically select a server. You can also manually select a server and make sure you are connected to the closest one. The server will affect the result of the speed test.

2. download/upload speed

The smoothness of opening web pages, browsing videos and playing games are all related to the download and upload speed. The unit used to measure the speed is Mbps (Mbit/s, i.e. several Mega bits per second). However, we usually use byte as the unit of file size, so how much does Mbps represent?

1 byte = 8 bits, divide the number of Mbps by 8, then you can know how much the network download speed is actually MB/s.

Here is an example, the download and upload numbers are 21.3Mbps and 1.98Mbps respectively, after dividing by 8 is 2.66MB/s (download) and 0.25MB/s (upload) respectively. Usually watching videos and playing games online are using the download speed, if it is a 100MB video, it takes about 37.5 seconds to finish downloading.

In Speedtest, you can also directly set different speed measurement units, such as Mbps, MB/s or even kb/s.

3. Ping response time

This refers to how long the end device needs to wait for a response from the server after sending a Ping packet request. For mobile users who play instant games, Ping response time is more important than on download speed, so the smaller the Ping number, the better.

4. Jitter time (Jitter)

A proper noun in electronics, mainly used to explain the error time generated by the conversion between analog (analog) and digital (digital), so the less jitter time the better, the smaller the jitter value, the more accurate the received transmitted information will be.

5. Packet loss (Packet loss)

As the name implies is that the packet is lost, this situation does not often occur.
