Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Datuk Seri Anwar today (15th) chaired the meeting of the National Economic Action Council and held a press conference accompanied by Economic Minister Rafizi, pointing out that household users with high electricity consumption will no longer enjoy the government’s electricity fee subsidy, and need to pay the electricity fee at the original price.
According to reports, Anwar said at the press conference that the B40 and M40 groups would not face the problem of rising electricity bills. Still, households with large electricity consumption must pay electricity bills according to market prices. He emphasized that 90% of households’ electricity bills will stay the same, and this new policy only aims at households with high electricity consumption.
However, Anwar must still clarify how to judge household users’ electricity consumption level. Anwar revealed that through this targeted subsidy program, the government is expected to save up to RM8 billion in electricity subsidy this year. The remaining money will be spent on the welfare of the people, and the estimated savings will depend on fuel prices.
It is reported that the Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Nik Nazmi revealed in February that the government would review the electricity subsidy for the T20 group to ensure that the target group is accurately benefited.
