Eid al-Fitr moved forward to May 2, will I still be entitled to a holiday on May 4?

01/05/2022

If Eid al-Fitr is brought forward to May 2, will the 4th of May still be a holiday?

According to the announcement made by the Minister of State on RTM, the first day of Eid al-Fitr will fall on Monday, May 2, while the second day of Eid al-Fitr will fall on Tuesday, May 3. This announcement was unexpected and disrupted many people’s plans.

Previously, it was predicted that the first day of Eid al-Fitr would fall on Tuesday, May 3, the second day of Eid al-Fitr would fall on Wednesday, May 4, and the Labor Day make-up holiday would fall on Monday, May 2. It was originally predicted that May 1 to May 4 would be back-to-back holidays, and work would only start on Thursday, May 5.

After the advancement of Eid to May 2, is May 4 still a public holiday? According to this logic, May 4 is still a public holiday. This is because the Labor Day holiday that originally fell on May 2 will be moved back to May 4.

However, this is subject to the arrangements of individual employers, some of whom will not list the holiday as a public holiday. What is certain is that government departments will still be open for business on May 5.

In neighboring countries, Indonesia and Brunei are celebrating Eid al-Fitr on May 2 like China, while Singapore celebrates Eid al-Fitr on May 3.
