Egg prices to rise after Lunar New Year

16/01/2022

The price of eggs will increase after the New Year!

The government’s SHMKM scheme will end on February 4, after which egg prices will no longer be strictly regulated by the government. People are urged to prepare in advance as egg prices will start to return to market prices.

According to egg wholesalers, the price of chicken feed has risen and farms are facing operating costs. The government’s current top price for eggs will result in losses for farm operators, so some of them are already buying fewer chicks to feed. This will lead to a reduction in egg production and a consequent increase in egg prices.

The retail price of Grade A eggs in West Malaysia is 44 sen, Grade B eggs 42 sen and Grade C eggs 40 sen under a top price scheme in Damascus. Next month, the price of Grade B eggs may be raised to 50 sen.

Not only will the price of eggs be raised in February, but broilers will also start to increase their prices. The current price per kilo for a clean chicken (with giblets) is about RM9.30, while a clean chicken without giblets sells for about RM10.30 per kilo.
