Receive a phone call and be told you owe taxes? You can just go online and check to see if you owe any taxes!
There are news stories of scams using the Inland Revenue Department. Usually, the scamsters will call the victim under the guise of the Inland Revenue Department and threaten them that they are behind on their taxes and that they will have to go to court or be arrested if they don’t pay their taxes on time. When the victim panics, he or she follows the scam’s instructions and sends money.
When you receive a call telling you that you owe taxes, you can check if you really owe taxes through the Inland Revenue Department’s (LHDN) website. The LHDN’s MyTax website will display all your tax and tax return information.
On the MyTax website, you will see a section for Tax Balance or Baki Cukai. If RM0.00 is shown in this section, it means that you do not owe any tax. If any amount appears, that is the amount of tax you owe. You can pay your tax arrears directly through the MyTax website.
You can also check directly on the MyTax website to see if you have been barred from leaving the country and your last tax payment.
