Disney’s Live-Action “Snow White” Film Embraces Diversity, Sparks Controversy

18/07/2023

Disney has been busy turning its animated flicks into live-action features in recent years.

There’s been a lot of excitement recently about the filming of “Snow White,” with leaked set photographs floating online. These images exhibit a variety of approaches to the seven dwarfs, with variances in height, skin color, and gender that depart greatly from the original picture. The press termed it “Snow White and the Politically Correct Companions.”

“In the twenty-first century, they’re still making films about seven dwarfs,”

said Peter Hayden Dinklage, a male actor who has openly discussed living with dwarfism.

In response, Disney announced that the dwarfs were replaced with “magical beings” in order to prevent reinforcing prejudices. The recent filming took place in Bedfordshire, England, and set images of a group of people walking on a grassy field were published by The Daily Mail. Only one individual was dressed as a dwarf, and the rest were normal-sized grownups. There were also two black actors and two female characters. Snow White was dressed in her distinctive yellow and white striped gown and signature crimson cape, while the male lead was dressed casually in blue, breaking from the typical prince’s attire.

The Daily Mail also revealed that the live-action adaption of “Snow White” affects the character’s growth significantly. Snow White will rely on her own intelligence to save everyone around her, especially because no male characters will be present. Disney stated that Rachel Zegler, a Latina actress with a somewhat yellowish complexion tone, would play Snow White.

Andrew Burnap, noted for his Broadway theatre performances, plays the male lead. This casting selection aroused debate, particularly when it was revealed that Burnap’s role may not be that of a prince or a huntsman. As a result, the emphasis switched to the depiction of the dwarfs. Initially, Disney denied the validity of the leaked photographs but then admitted that they were taken on-site but were not officially distributed, without providing any further details.
