Controversy Over “Inappropriate” Stage Outfits on Sam Smith’s Raunchy Gloria Tour

18/04/2023

Recently, Sam Smith launched his Gloria Tour with a string of performances that went viral on social media. Some concertgoers who felt the non-binary pop star’s bawdy performances and stage attire were not “child-friendly” criticized them.

Smith wore a green dress with a “queer” headpiece during the show’s finale, “Act 3: Sex,” before stripping down to black sequined knickers and fishnet tights for a cover of Madonna’s smash “Human Nature.” Some audience members, however, felt the performance was improper for youngsters and voiced their concerns on social media.

Despite the response, many Sam Smith fans have defended the artist, accusing critics of being “pearl clutchers.” Supporters believe that Smith’s music is not aimed towards children and that it is up to parents to decide whether to bring their children to the concert.

“It’s not even like Sam’s music has ever been targeted at kids, either!” one fan tweeted. They were never a Disney or bubblegum pop child. It’s ridiculous to expect young musicians to remain ‘kid-friendly’ even when they’re 30 (their fanbase grow with them), but Sam Smith has never been that.”

“Maybe an unpopular opinion, but Sam Smith does not owe it to any of you to be appropriate for children,” another said. A LOT of concerts aren’t fit for children; it’s up to you whether or not you bring your children.”

Regardless of the issue, those who attended Sam Smith’s Gloria Tour were overwhelmingly positive. The singer’s dedication to self-expression and inclusivity has been a driving force behind their success, and it is apparent that they will continue to break traditional norms and push limits in the music industry.
