Coco Lee, Renowned Hong Kong-American Vocalist, Passes Away at 48

Hong Kong-based Coco Lee, an American vocalist, has passed away. She was 48 years old.

Coco had been suffering from depression for several years, according to a statement posted on Weibo by her sister, Nancy Lee, yesterday (5th July 2023).

According to Nancy, after a protracted battle with this illness, her condition quickly deteriorated and she committed suicide at her home on July 2.

The singer was brought to the hospital, and despite the medical team’s best efforts, Coco was pronounced dead on 5th July 2023. Several Chinese media outlets in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and China also reported Coco’s death.

Nancy stated in her article that Coco’s singing career will be 30 years old in 2023.

Coco has received international praise for her top-selling songs and outstanding live performances, according to her.

She added: “Coco is also known to have worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and she went all out to shine for the Chinese. We are proud of her!”

In her post, Nancy also expressed feeling grateful and honored to have such an excellent and outstanding sister.

“We know now she has gone to a happier place and no longer suffers from depression; we trust God has her best interest looked after!

“Now, our greatest responsibility is to take good care of our elderly mother. I hope everyone will pray for this poor old lady and allow us time and privacy in healing,” she wrote.

In 1994, Coco released her first solo album, Love From Now On.

According to Hong Kong Daily The Standard, the musician has sold tens of millions of CDs worldwide.

Coco was crowned champion of the fourth season of the Chinese reality show I Am A Singer in 2016.

She is well recognized for her role as Fa Mulan in Disney’s Mulan (1998) in Mandarin.
