Chicken prices to rise from next month, government to announce cash aid by end of June

The government’s retail price ceiling measure (PHM) for chicken and eggs will end on June 30, and chicken prices will start to fluctuate with market prices from July onwards.

According to the news issued by the Ministry of Trade and Consumer Affairs, the Ministry of Finance has drawn up an assistance plan for the price increase of chicken and will announce the details of the assistance plan at the end of June.

The current price of standard chicken in the peninsula is RM8.90 per kilo, while the price of super chicken is RM9.90 per kilo. 43 sen for each grade A egg, 41 sen for each grade B egg and 39 sen for each grade C egg.

The government will no longer provide subsidies to chicken farms from July, allowing chicken prices to follow the free float of the market. The government will provide direct cash assistance to the people to reduce their burden of living.

The chicken price ceiling implemented by the government before has suppressed the domestic chicken industry and may cause our country to rely heavily on imported chicken meat. For this reason, the government has decided to abolish the price ceiling and allow chicken prices to fluctuate freely.
