According to a Facebook posting by a netizen named Kelvin, he received a call from a person claiming to be from RHB Bank, recommending a personal loan offer to Kelvin, who claimed that the interest rate for the personal loan was only 3%, so Kelvin gave the information to the other party without any doubt.
A day later, the scammer informed Kelvin that his personal loan application had been approved and that he could borrow RM120,000. However, the scammer pointed out that Kelvin’s name was recorded on the pending list and asked Kelvin to pay RM3,000 in order to have his name removed from the list.
The scammers then asked Kelvin to remit another RM3,000 in order to obtain priority for the process of removing his name from the list, which Kelvin did. The scammer received RM6,000 from Kelvin and then claimed that he needed a guarantor and RM8,000 to ensure that Kelvin would be able to pay the loan over a two-year period.
Kelvin then went to the bank with his friend to check the authenticity of the personal loan and was told that there was no record of any loan and Kelvin realized that he had been scammed.
The whole scam was very suspicious. The person was to apply for a personal loan, but the other party asked the person to send money first, which was very unusual. In addition, the other party even asked the person to transfer money to staff’s personal account, which is really strange, because the bank will never ask someone to transfer money to staff’s personal accounts.
