The director of the Complaints Bureau of the State of Sydney, Datuk Gan Yong Hwa, said he had received complaints from residents about the inconvenience caused by hawkers selling along the Bukit Serdang road and hoped that the authorities would pay attention to them.

He understands that it is close to the Lunar New Year and some hawker traders want to take advantage of the situation to earn more income before the New Year; therefore, he suggested that the authorities should arrange a location nearby that is safe and does not affect the traffic, o that these hawker traders can operate without any worries.

“A safe location will not only attract more customers but also give them peace of mind to spend their money, which I believe will improve the hawkers’ business.”

He made the announcement after visiting the area along BS5/26 in Bukit Serdang and talking to local vendors and residents.

He pointed out that the residents generally did not object to the hawking activities, only that sometimes too many people parked illegally, causing traffic congestion and causing complaints from road users.

He also said that the said stretch of road is a major road and besides vehicular traffic, it is also used by public buses and as such it is often congested and treacherous, posing a threat to the safety of road users.

He said it is understood that the said vendors operate on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, some of them are only licensed by Bacha, while others do not even have any license at all.

He also reiterated that he had intervened in the complaint because he realized that with proper mediation, a win-win situation could definitely be achieved by arranging a convenient and safe location nearby for the hawkers to operate.
