With the gradual opening up of economic activities in Malaysia, many wage earners have been coming to work in companies. It was thought that everything would be on track, but a recent survey revealed that as many as 61% of wage earners are planning to change jobs in next year, with the highest percentage of wage earners aged 18-24!

SME talent solutions company Employment Hero recently released its Employee Mobility and Retention Report 2021 after surveying a sample of 1,004 employees in Malaysia earlier this September. In the report, 61% of employees plan to leave their jobs in the next year, which is much higher than the other countries surveyed, namely 59% in Singapore, 55% in the UK, 50% in New Zealand and 48% in Australia.

When looking at intention to leave by age group, 81% of employees aged 18-24, 68% of employees aged 25-35 and 56% of employees aged 55+ want to leave. However, it is worth noting that while the report shows that a whopping 61% of employees plan to change jobs, 45% say they like their current job, 24% like their job and only 4% say they hate their current job. In other words, the main reason why employees leave their jobs is not the job itself, but other factors that influence the idea of leaving.

Reasons for leaving

1. lack of room for development in the job (36%)
2. lack of recognition (27%)
3. Lack of training opportunities (26%)
4. No salary increase (24%)
5. Overworked (20%)
6. Lack of flexibility (19%)

In the report, Ben Thompson, co-founder and CEO of Employment Hero, noted that the epidemic has given employees more time to think about their career plans and, in addition to pay rises, they are considering factors such as the availability of space to grow and the respect and trust they will receive at work. In addition, many are looking to take advantage of the global re-opening to look for development opportunities overseas.

He also mentioned that if you want to retain talent, then salary increases, rewards and recognition or changes to the company’s management style would be good ways to go.
