Apple today announced that it will launch a self-service repair service program starting next year that will allow users to purchase original Apple parts and props in order to repair device themselves. It is understood that the program will first apply to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 ranges, with Mac computers with M1 chips to follow.
Fix screen, battery and lens issues yourself
Apple will also provide users with the same online repair manuals as the company’s Authorised Service Providers (AASPs) and other independent repair services (but they will be written manuals, not video tutorials). The program will initially allow users to repair the most common screen, battery and lens issues themselves.
Giving users more choice
Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, said that opening up the availability of genuine Apple parts would give users more choice when they need to repair their devices. He said the number of repair stations with access to Apple Genuine Parts, tools and training has almost doubled in the last three years, and now with the new scheme, users will have more choice.
Genuine parts are relatively inexpensive
Fans of the iPhone know that Apple won’t accept broken iPhones if they are sent to a general mobile phone shop for repair, and sending them to the original manufacturer for repair isn’t cheap. This program will allow users to get original parts at a lower price and repair their products. Users will also receive a discount for sending old parts back to the company for recycling after repair. The scheme will first be launched in the US next year and will be expanded to other countries in 2022.
